Installation:

Quit FS if it is running before installation.

1. Double click this file archive to open it. You will find this text file and a file called Setup.exe.

2. Double click the Setup.exe file to start the installation. Press the Run button at the warning screen. If it doesn't find your main FS2004 folder automatically, press the ... button and browse to it. If you are installing into FS2002 or FSX it will NOT find your main FS2002 or FSX folder. Press the ... button and browse to it.

3. If installing into FSX, move the DC-7 folder from the FSX/Aircraft folder to the FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes folder. It will ask if it is OK to overwrite the current folder, say OK. You will only be adding the texture folder to the existing folder, not overwriting anything.

4. If you don't know how to edit text files, see the bottom of this section. Copy the following section into the Base Pack's aircraft.cfg file, at the end of the existing livery sections:

[fltsim.1]
title=Douglas DC-7 National Airlines
sim=dc7
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=national
kb_checklists=dc7_check
kb_reference=dc7_ref
ui_manufacturer=Douglas
ui_type=DC-7
ui_variation=National Airlines
atc_heavy=0
atc_id=
atc_airline=National
atc_flight_number=172
description=The DC-7 allowed the inauguration of non-stop transcontinental service. Most large US airlines had DC-7's\s The DC-7's were eventually replaced by jets, and usually converted to or sold as freighters.
prop_anim_ratio=0.9

5. You will need to re-number the fltsim line of your new livery. They should be listed in numerical order. If the last fltsim entry is [fltsim.0], your livery's entry should be [fltsim.1]. If it is [fltsim.5], renumber yours to [fltsim.6]. If it is a different number, renumber your livery's fltsim line to one higher than that.

4a. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, go to your FS2004/Aircraft or FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes folder. If you find a dc7nal folder you must remove it:

4b. If a Removed folder is not already present, create a new folder within this folder (right click a blank area of the right panel, choose New/Folder). Name it Removed.

4c. MOVE the dc7nal folder (if present) to the Removed folder (right click on the plane's folder, choose Cut, right click on the Removed Folder and choose Paste). DO NOT REMOVE the DC-7, DC-7B Dom, DC-7B Intl, or DC-7C folders if present!

After installation of all the files, start FS2004/FSX/FS2002 and the plane will appear in the Select Aircraft menu.

NOTE: If you do not know how to open and edit a cfg file, here are instructions:

a. In the Base Pack plane's folder, if you only see a file called aircraft with a type of CFG (when viewing the folder using My Computer or Windows Explorer), choose Tools/Folder Options from the menu, click the View tab, and uncheck the box "Hide Extensions for known file types". Click OK.

b. Double click the aircraft.cfg file in My Computer or Windows Explorer to open it. If it asks what program you want to use to open this file, choose Wordpad from the list. Notepad is also acceptable.

c. To select a line for copying, drag the mouse across the line, from left to right. It should become highlighted. Choose Edit/Copy.

d. If pasting this copied text into another file, open that file by double clicking it.
   i. If you are not replacing any text in the new file (i.e. adding a new livery section, etc.), click where you want the new text to be placed, and choose Edit/Paste.
   ii. If you are replacing text in the new file (or within the same file)(i.e. replacing the sim= line of the new livery's section with the sim= line of the top livery section), select the text to be replaced by dragging the mouse, as above. Choose Edit/Paste and the copied text will replace the original text.

When Lockheed developed the L1049 Super Constellation, TWA enjoyed an advantage over other airlines, since the plane had non-stop transcontinental range, and was faster than the DC-6 (TWA marketing people didn't think people would sit still for a non-stop trip, however, and insisted on a stop until American announced upcoming non-stop service with their new DC-7's!). To counter this threat from the Super Conny, American requested that Douglas
develop a plane with the L1049's engines (Wright R-3350's). Douglas was doubtful that a plane like that would sell, so American ordered 25 for $40 million, to provide an incentive. American ended up owning 34 DC-7's, and sales were made almost exlcusively to domestic US operators which used them on transcontinental routes, since the DC-7 didn't have the range for transocean non-stops and thus would not be much improvement over the DC-6B. However,
they were very successful in transcontinental service, since they were faster than the Super Constellations, and allowed American to advertise 8 hour non-stop service.

Sales eventually totalled 105, with the initial purchasers being Untited (57), American (34), Delta (10), and National (4). However, Douglas went on to modify the DC-7 (with more fuel) to the DC-7B, and (with a lengthened fuselage and wings) to the DC-7C Seven Seas, and eventually sold a total of 338 of the DC-7 series, at a substantial profit. The DC-7's proved to be less reliable than the fabled DC-6B, and less economical as well. Thus, the DC-7's had a short stay in service with the major airlines, and were sold soon after being replaced with jets.
